The Renin, PRA & Hypertension App provides a sophisticated approach to managing hypertension through the use of plasma renin activity (PRA) testing. This tool is designed to assist healthcare professionals in selecting appropriate antihypertensive medications, aiming for optimal blood pressure control with minimal pharmacological intervention.

The underlying principle of the app is the characterization of hypertension as driven by excess body sodium-volume (V) or elevated plasma renin (R). In this framework, antihypertensive therapies are categorized as either anti-V or anti-R agents.

• A low PRA suggests a predominance of volume-induced hypertension, warranting treatment with an anti-V medication while minimizing the use of anti-R drugs unless specific indications are present.
• Conversely, a medium to high PRA points to renin-mediated hypertension. In such cases, initial treatment would focus on anti-R agents, and if blood pressure remains uncontrolled despite renin inhibition, an anti-V drug may be introduced.
